Kalshi has signed an official sponsorship deal with the Asociación del Fútbol Argentino (AFA), positioning the prediction market operator alongside the reigning World Cup champions for the tournament’s duration.
The agreement, announced on June 10, was amplified over the weekend when Lionel Messi posted a promotional giveaway to his Instagram followers ahead of Argentina’s title defense against Algeria.
Partnership details
Kalshi becomes an official sponsor of AFA for the World Cup, gaining rights to use Argentina’s sky-blue and white crest across its marketing materials. The agreement covers co-branded activations and coordinated social campaigns, including the giveaway Messi posted alongside teammates Nicolás Otamendi and Rodrigo De Paul.
The promotion offered fans a chance to win signed Argentina jerseys, marking the first activation under a partnership that runs through the tournament.
The deal also brings in Genius Sports, AFA’s official data and streaming partner, which will supply Kalshi with verified information to create and settle related prediction market contracts. Kalshi said the arrangement reduces reliance on unofficial or delayed data and will see it join Genius Sports’ integrity information-sharing process.
That process is meant to give professional leagues greater visibility into market activity tied to their events. Kalshi struck a similar data partnership with Sportradar earlier this month, covering MLB, NHL, MLS and UFC data.
Adam Barrick, Head of Sports Partnerships at Kalshi, said:
“Argentina is the standard of excellence in world football. That’s exactly who Kalshi belongs alongside. We’re building the future of how people engage with live events, and partnering with the reigning champions of the beautiful game is the clearest signal we can send about where we’re headed.”
Leandro Petersen, Chief Commercial and Marketing Officer at AFA, said:
“Kalshi is a leader in its category, and their decision to partner with AFA is a testament to the global strength our brand has built since 2017. Each new alliance of this caliber reinforces that the path we charted for AFA’s international expansion is the right one, and that the world’s leading organizations want to be part of it.”
Star power strategy
Messi joins a growing roster of athletes linked to Kalshi, including Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, who is also an investor in the platform. Golfer Bryson DeChambeau, Oilers star Connor McDavid and WNBA champion Breanna Stewart hold similar partner or investor roles.
Kalshi separately holds marketing agreements with the NHL, the Chicago Blackhawks and Madison Square Garden, home of the New York Knicks.
Regulatory pressure
The marketing push comes as Kalshi battles separate state-level challenges to its sports contracts. Nevada regulators filed a contempt motion against the operator on June 12. New Mexico’s attorney general filed a separate suit days earlier, alleging Kalshi runs an unlicensed sportsbook in the state.
Kalshi has also faced pushback abroad, after Spain’s gambling regulator ordered a temporary block on the platform in May. The American Gaming Association has pressed its own tax revenue claims against Kalshi, estimating losses of more than $1bn, a figure the operator has dismissed.
Kalshi, regulated federally by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, has offered sports event contracts in nearly every US state since early 2025, even in jurisdictions where traditional sports betting is illegal.
Argentina opens its title defense against Algeria in Kansas City on June 16. Kalshi lists Argentina as a -251 favorite to win that match, with more than $722,000 already traded in the market as of June 15. A separate market on Messi to score a goal was priced at -104.
The Argentina deal points to a wider pattern among prediction market operators building credibility through marquee sports properties rather than conventional advertising. Each new athlete or federation partnership adds to the commercial and political stakes for sportsbook operators and state regulators already disputing Kalshi’s legal status.
