  • Stake has staged what it describes as the world’s first football match on a synthetic pitch suspended from a hot air balloon at 10,000 feet.
  • 6 extreme sports content creators competed on a 12m x 20m platform during a 60-minute flight before parachuting from the structure.
  • The stunt is the latest instalment of Stake’s “It’s All At Stake” campaign, which the operator says has generated more than 200 million views in its opening week.

Crypto operator Stake has staged what it describes as the world’s first football match played on a floating pitch at 10,000 feet.

The activation, released on 23 June, forms part of the operator’s global marketing push around the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The branded stunt saw 6 extreme sports content creators compete in a small-sided match on a purpose-built synthetic pitch carried aloft by a hot air balloon.

Up in the air

According to Stake, the 12m x 20m synthetic grass pitch weighs approximately 3,000kg. The platform was suspended at altitude during a 60-minute balloon flight. The weight and dimensions of the structure required a purpose-built solution capable of supporting a playable surface at height.

The 6 participants were Nathan Roque, Alessio Papia, Nicolo Contrada, Yasmin Xavier, Sara Vidal and Carol Chafauzer. All are extreme sports content creators rather than professional footballers. They parachuted from the platform at the end of the match, as shown in the campaign video.

The production is a branded, non-competitive stunt and is not a formal football competition recognised by any governing body.

Beyond the balloon

The balloon stunt is the latest instalment of Stake’s “It’s All At Stake” brand platform, launched ahead of the current tournament and distributed across YouTube, Instagram and X.

The campaign also includes a separate hero video featuring former internationals Sergio Agüero, Iker Casillas, Eden Hazard and Patrice Evra in a series of football culture vignettes. Stake named Hazard a World Cup ambassador earlier this year before bringing the 4 legends together under the same campaign.

According to Stake, the “It’s All At Stake” campaign generated more than 200 million views across earned and social channels in the tournament’s first week. The figure is based on the operator’s own metrics.

Jarrod Febbraio, Director at Stake, said:

“This summer sees one of the biggest cultural moments on the planet and simply showing up is no longer enough. Our ambition is to create campaigns that genuinely capture people’s attention, spark conversation and give fans something they haven’t seen before.

“At Stake, we are always looking for ways to push creative boundaries and challenge expectations around sports marketing. Whether it’s our It’s All At Stake campaign or staging a football match thousands of feet in the air, the objective is the same – creating entertainment that resonates with audiences and delivers memorable experiences around the moments they care most about.”

Arms race

The balloon match clearly points to a shift in how sports betting operators approach global football tournaments. Premium broadcast slots command peak prices during the World Cup, and audience resistance to conventional advertising formats has grown.

The result has been a pivot towards high-production, social-first content designed to generate organic reach rather than paid media impressions.

Stake’s approach combines ambassador talent, extreme sports creators and large-scale physical stunts. Each element is designed to embed the brand within the cultural conversation around the tournament rather than within a conventional advertising break.

The World Cup’s knockout rounds are still to come, and further activations under the same campaign banner appear likely.
