Legal sports betting kicked off in Missouri just after midnight on December 1, 2025, marking the state’s entry as the 39th US jurisdiction to regulate both online and retail wagering for adults aged 21+.
Quarter of a million accounts activated
8 sportsbooks went live across the state, all operating under the oversight of the Missouri Gaming Commission (MGC): bet365, BetMGM, Caesars, Circa, DraftKings, Fanatics, FanDuel and theScore Bet. Underdog withdrew just days before the launch to focus on prediction market and daily fantasy sports (DFS) instead.
GeoComply, a geolocation compliance company, reported robust early activity from its sportsbook partners, highlighting the appetite for legal wagering in the state.
The first 24 hours saw more than 250,000 new accounts activated as players embraced the new betting options. GeoComply tracked over 2.6 million geolocation verifications, with activity concentrated around major population centres like Kansas City and St. Louis, but spread throughout Missouri.
Fans began preparing early, with nearly 188,000 people pre-registering between November 17 and 30. These figures represent the engagement on GeoComply’s partner sportsbooks and demonstrate a high level of consumer enthusiasm from the outset.
“Missouri has shown for years that it’s one of the most eager states in the country for legal sports betting,” said Kip Levin, GeoComply CEO.
“What we’ve seen in the first 24 hours is remarkable. Tens of thousands of Missourians immediately joined safe, regulated platforms the moment they became legal. It’s a powerful reminder of how quickly consumers embrace a well-regulated market when the option finally exists.”
Missouri legalisation
Missouri’s journey to legal sports betting gained momentum in November 2024 with the passage of Amendment 2 via public referendum. Voters approved the measure by a narrow margin of 50.1% to 49.9%, or fewer than 7,500 votes, authorising a regulated sports wagering market after years of legislative efforts.
This constitutional amendment cleared the path for both online and retail betting, positioning the state within the growing US sports betting sector.
The state’s framework sets a 10% tax on adjusted gross revenue. These new funds are set to boost public education, problem gambling services, and cover regulatory costs.
Consumer protections are embedded in the market, including mandatory identity verification, deposit limits, self-exclusion options, and restrictions on some college prop bets to preserve sports integrity. Lawmakers in Missouri designed these provisions to balance economic benefits with player safeguards.
$4 billion in the first year
Market analysts project Missouri’s handle could approach $4 billion in its first year, generating over $500 million in operator revenue and more than $50 million in tax revenue for the state. The launch also keeps Missouri bettors from crossing into Kansas and Illinois, retaining more local activity.
This milestone expands the regulated sports betting footprint in the Midwest and offers fresh growth opportunities for operators. Investors and policymakers will watch closely as Missouri’s market develops, shaping future licensing, marketing strategies, and regional competition.
