Canada

Online gambling regulation is provincial. Ontario is the only province with a fully regulated private iGaming market, launched April 2022 through iGaming Ontario (iGO) and Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO). Over 70 licensed operators, 20% GGR tax.

Alberta passed Bill 48 (iGaming Alberta Act) in May 2025, creating Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) to oversee private market. Regulatory framework published January 2026; market launch expected Q1-Q2 2026 with tier-based licensing.

Other provinces operate through provincial lottery corporations or allow access to internationally licensed operators. Federal Bill C-218 (2021) enabled single-event sports betting nationwide.

Gambling winnings tax-free for recreational players. Strong AML/KYC requirements align with FINTRAC standards.
