Stake has appointed Iker Casillas as global ambassador, positioning the former Spain captain at the centre of its marketing strategy for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The crypto betting operator announced the partnership as part of its Road to 2026 campaign ahead of the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Casillas will anchor Stake’s football programming over the next two years, featuring across fan engagement initiatives, match analysis, and behind-the-scenes content tied to major football moments during the World Cup cycle.

Legendary career credentials

The 43-year-old goalkeeper captained Spain to victory at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa and won two UEFA European Championships in 2008 and 2012. His club career spanned 25 years at Real Madrid and four seasons at FC Porto, accumulating 25 major titles.

At Real Madrid, Casillas won five La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey trophies, three UEFA Champions League titles, two UEFA Super Cups and the FIFA Club World Cup. He made 725 appearances for the Spanish giants, establishing himself as the club’s second most-capped player.

Casillas earned 167 international caps for Spain, making him the country’s second most-capped player. He retired from professional football in February 2020 following a heart attack during a Porto training session in May 2019.

The goalkeeper’s individual honours include the Prince of Asturias Award and the Royal Cross of the Order of Sporting Merit. He won the IFFHS World’s Best Goalkeeper Award for five consecutive years from 2008 to 2012.

“I’m really happy to join the Stake family,” Casillas said.

“For me, it’s a different and fun opportunity, with a lot of potential ahead. I’ve seen how the community keeps growing and the great energy around the brand, and I was excited to become part of something like this. I’m sure we’re going to have a great time and create some very interesting things together.”

Ambassador programme structure

Under the partnership, Casillas will participate in fan-facing initiatives throughout the World Cup cycle. The programme includes match analysis, behind-the-scenes material and experiences linked to major football moments during the tournament year.

Stake positioned the appointment as part of its commercial planning around the global event, using high-profile football figures to support content and engagement initiatives. The company indicated further announcements connected to the programme are expected as preparations continue.

“Stake has been working with great footballers for a long time, and it’s an honour to join that group,” Casillas added. “I also have friends within the family, like Kun Agüero, so I’m really looking forward to seeing them in person soon.”

The former goalkeeper referenced the tournament’s significance in his role.

“A World Cup year is always special. It’s one of the trophies every footballer dreams of lifting, so I understand the emotion and pressure that comes with a tournament like this. Every edition brings new stories, new hopes, and unforgettable moments. It’s an honour to experience this World Cup alongside Stake and enjoy it with the whole community.”

Post-retirement activities

Beyond professional football, Casillas maintains a digital following of more than 65 million across social platforms. He operates several projects, including the Iker Casillas Academy, SportBoost, 1K Fútbol Club and the podcast Bajo los palos (“Between the Posts”).

He also serves as a mentor across sports and technology-focused platforms, leveraging his transition from elite athlete to digital entrepreneur.

Strategic positioning for World Cup cycle

Akhil Sarin, Chief Marketing Officer at Stake, framed the partnership as a statement of intent ahead of the tournament.

“With the World Cup 2026 on the horizon, the energy is building, and Stake is ready to take the field. Bringing on Iker Casillas as one of our ambassadors marks a definitive statement of intent.

“His seamless transition from World Cup champion to tech entrepreneur bridges the gap between elite performance and digital innovation. We are thrilled to bring his passion and winning mentality directly to our community, igniting a new level of excitement for fans globally.”

The appointment arrives as betting operators increase their reliance on athlete-driven partnerships to establish authenticity and reach in key football markets. Securing a World Cup-winning captain adds credibility and positions Stake more competitively across major territories.

The Road to 2026 platform provides Stake with a narrative structure aligning marketing activity with international windows, domestic seasons and major milestones across the football calendar.

Company operations and sponsorship portfolio

Founded in 2017, Stake reports more than 80 million monthly visits. The operator is known for its cryptocurrency wagering operations and has entered regulated local-currency gaming markets in Italy, Denmark, Brazil, Colombia and Peru.

Stake’s sponsorship portfolio includes rapper Drake, the Stake F1 Team, Everton Football Club and the UFC. The brand has previously partnered with Watford, Hyderabad FC, USA Cricket Men’s National Team, Davis Cup, Trinbago Knight Riders, Major League Cricket and the Volleyball Nations League.

The Casillas partnership marks the launch of Stake’s ambassador programme for the World Cup cycle, with additional announcements expected as the tournament approaches. The programme aims to sustain engagement throughout the entire pre-World Cup period across multiple football properties and platforms.
