MGA launches free self-assessment tool to promote safer gambling in Malta
- The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has launched a free, anonymous online Self-Assessment Tool to help individuals evaluate their gambling habits
- The tool is based on the Problem Gambling Severity Index and is available in English and Maltese
- Users who show signs of problem gambling are directed to local support organisations for guidance and care
The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has introduced a new online Self-Assessment Tool aimed at helping individuals reflect on their gambling behaviours. Launched recently, the tool is available in both English and Maltese and is designed to be fully anonymous and free to use by anyone.
This Self-Assessment Tool was developed in collaboration with local organisations including Sedqa, Caritas Malta, the OASI Foundation, and the Responsible Gaming Foundation.
It is grounded in the Problem Gambling Severity Index, a widely recognised and evidence-based screening questionnaire that consists of nine simple questions. These questions help users assess the severity of their gambling habits while also considering the broader social and environmental contexts influencing behaviour.
The tool encourages self-reflection in a user-friendly manner, allowing players to evaluate whether their gambling may be harmful or problematic. If the assessment indicates a possible issue, users are directed to one of the participating local organisations for professional support and advice. The tool also promotes awareness of safer gambling options, such as setting betting limits or using global bet-blocking services.
This initiative reflects the MGA’s ongoing dedication to player protection and a people-first approach. By working closely with local entities in Malta and Gozo, the MGA aims to ensure that individuals experiencing gambling-related harms receive timely information and access to help when needed.
The MGA encourages players to use the Self-Assessment Tool regularly to monitor their gambling behaviours over time. This ongoing mindfulness helps individuals stay aware of any changes in their habits that may require professional attention or preventive measures.
This new tool represents a significant step in the authority’s efforts to promote safer gambling and minimise harm in the Maltese market. Operators and regulators are expected to continue supporting such resources as part of broader responsible gambling frameworks that align with international best practices.
