  • Google Ads updated its gambling and games policy on May 4, 2026, permitting online gambling advertisements in Alberta for AGLC-authorised operators.
  • Brand awareness campaigns are the only format permitted during the transition period, with all campaigns required to be geo-restricted to Alberta.
  • AGLC has released a list of 28 sportsbook and casino operators that had registered or commenced registration as of May 1, 2026.

Google Ads will update its gambling policy on May 4 to allow AGLC-licensed operators to run brand awareness campaigns in Alberta ahead of the province’s planned July 13 iGaming launch.

The change opens a pre-launch advertising window for operators preparing to enter Alberta’s regulated iGaming market, which is set to go live on July 13, 2026. The update applies specifically to AGLC-authorised operators and is not a blanket green light for all gambling advertising in the province.

Brand campaigns only

Under the revised policy, operators are limited to brand awareness campaigns during the transition period. All advertising must be strictly geo-restricted to Alberta; operators cannot direct Alberta-related marketing toward audiences in other Canadian provinces.

Operators wishing to advertise before formal wagering begins must submit proof of their AGLC licence application to qualify for Google platform certification.

“Advertisers seeking to establish a market presence ahead of the commencement of formal wagering are required to submit valid proof of their AGLC licence application to be eligible for certification. The normal certification requirements will apply after formal wagering commences.”

Once the market opens on July 13, standard Google Ads certification requirements will apply and operators will be able to run a broader range of promotional activity in line with AGLC guidelines.

Operator landscape

AGLC has published a Gaming Registrations list showing 28 sportsbook and casino operators that had registered or commenced the registration process as of May 1, 2026.

Confirmed names include FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars brands, BetRivers, PointsBet Canada, theScore Bet, Betway, Bet99, Bally’s, Golden Nugget, JackpotCity, Spin Casino, and Ruby Fortune, among others.

Alberta is set to become Canada’s second regulated iGaming jurisdiction after Ontario, which launched its open, competitive market in April 2022. The Google policy adjustment ahead of Ontario’s launch offers a useful editorial parallel, though Google’s own policy documentation does not draw a direct comparison between the two.

Responsible gambling framework

The advertising update sits within a broader consumer protection framework the AGLC has established for the regulated market. AGLC compliance guidance requires that advertising include responsible gambling messaging and that bonuses or promotional credits be directed only to users who have consented to receive them.

Advertisements must not target minors, nor individuals who are self-excluded or identified as high-risk, including when marketing is conducted through third-party services such as paid search platforms.

With July 13 falling during the final stretch of the FIFA World Cup and an active Canadian Football League schedule, operators that have already secured AGLC registration have a defined window to build paid search visibility before one of the most commercially significant market openings in Canadian iGaming history.
