Betfred fined £240,000 for online slots breaches

The UK Gambling Commission has imposed a £240,000 penalty on Petfre Gibraltar Limited following a regulatory finding that features in its online slots operations breached industry standards.

Petfre Gibraltar Limited, which operates the Betfred.com and Oddsking.com brands, was sanctioned by the regulator on 1 October 2025 for failings related to its online slot game offerings.

Slot game related issue

The Gibraltar-based subsidiary of the wider Betfred group was found to have breached specific regulations governing online slot machine operations, though the Commission has not disclosed full details of the violations in its initial announcement.

The UKGC said that failings included hosting games that failed to display the consumer’s net position, as well as games that celebrated losses as wins. It noted that a system should not celebrate a return that is less than or equal to the total stake gambled. The Commission expressed concern about players’ ability to interpret their gameplay accurately and make informed choices.

John Pierce, Commission Director of Enforcement, said:

“Features that impair a consumer’s ability to make informed decisions are not appropriate and pose a clear risk.

“While we acknowledge the operator acted swiftly to remove the affected games, this enforcement action should serve as a clear signal to the wider industry to review and strengthen their compliance practices — and to ensure that gameplay is fair and consumers are not exposed to unnecessary risk.”

Other violations

This penalty adds to a growing list of enforcement actions against various Betfred entities. The parent company Done Bros Cash Betting Limited was previously fined £3.25 million in July 2023 for social responsibility and anti-money laundering failures.

Petfre Gibraltar has faced multiple regulatory challenges in recent years. In September 2022, the same company was hit with a £2.87 million penalty for social responsibility and AML breaches between October 2019 and December 2020.

The 2022 investigation revealed the operator had insufficient controls to prevent high-velocity spending by new customers, with one customer losing £70,000 over just 10 hours after opening an account.

The latest £240,000 fine specifically targets online slots regulation compliance, representing a more focused enforcement action compared to the broader social responsibility and AML investigations of previous years.

Betfred operates approximately 1,750 retail betting shops across the UK alongside its online platforms, making it one of Britain’s largest gambling operators. The company has consistently stated its commitment to working with regulators and improving compliance standards following each enforcement action.

The penalty comes at a time when the UK Gambling Commission has intensified its enforcement activities across the industry, with operators facing increased scrutiny over customer protection measures and regulatory compliance.
